University of North Carolina

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the first state university to open its doors and was the only public university in the nation to award degrees to students in the 18th century. The cornerstone for Old East, the first state university building, was laid in 1793 and just 15 months later, UNC opened its doors to Hinton James. James, the first student in the university's history, came on foot from Wilmington, a distance of more than 150 miles. Today, Carolina offers bachelors, master's, doctoral and professional degrees in academic areas critical to North Carolina.

The University of North Carolina offers an outstanding academic institution with exceptional athletic programs. UNC Tar Heels lead all ACC schools with 33 NCAA titles including: Men's Basketball (5), Women's Basketball (1), Field Hockey (4), Men's Lacrosse (4), Men's Soccer (1), and Women's Soccer (18).

Duke University
First established as Trinity College, Duke University is divided between the original 19th-century, Georgian-style East Campus, with its distinctive stone Gothic structures, and the newer West Campus.
