Although we are half way through the summer, there are still plenty of major events to look forward to in Chapel Hill and Orange County. Here’s a look at what is coming up in August and September.
August 5 – September 5, 2016: 17th Annual Forest Theater Giant Puppet Pageant presented by Paperhand Puppet Intervention. This year The Beautiful Beast, which takes you inside the world of the beasts and monsters that inhabit our dream, is being performed at Forest Theatre on the UNC Campus. August 8, 2016: BikeFest 2016: The 21st Annual Rural Heritage Tour. Sponsored by Carolina Tarwheels Bicycle Club, the tour takes more than 850 riders from downtown Hillsborough’s Superior Courthouse through Orange County on various rides. Check-in begins at 6:30 am, with the first ride leaving at 7:30 am. www.ncbikefest.org.
August 27, 2016: River Park Concert. Held at 144 E. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough, this FREE concert runs from noon – 7:30 pm. 4 bands are scheduled to perform, while a young musicians workshop will also be held. Booths focusing on art, environment, and wellness will be set up, as well as a Food Court, Beer, & Wine Garden. Additional information can be found at http://www.riverparkconcert.org/
September 10, 2016: Colonial Kids Day, an annual event sponsored by the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, the Orange County Historical Museum, and the Burwell School Historic Site. Scheduled from 11 am – 3 pm, this event, which provides a look at historic Hillsborough, is designed for the whole family. Held at the Burwell Historic Site (319 N. Churton St.), activities will include:
Colonial games by the Burwell School staff.
Craft activities by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Demonstrations by the Carolina Colonial Dancers
Demonstrations on butter-churning, candle-making, quilt-making, and more.
Demonstrations on weaving and spinning, as well as finger weaving activities, by the Orange County Historical Museum.
A walking tour of Hillsborough Revolutionary War-era sites, scheduled to leave from the Alexander Dickson House (Hillsborough Visitors Center at 150 E. King St. at 11 am

September 10, 2016: Bluegrass at Moorefields (Rain date is September 11, 2016). Scheduled from 2 pm to 7pm, this event includes five bands, food trucks, beer and wine and will be held on the lawn at Moorefields, a picture perfect 70-acre homestead located at 2201 Moorefields Rd. in Hillsborough. September 16 – 17, 2016: Hog Day. Scheduled for 6 pm – 10 pm on Friday and 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, this event includes contests, music, crafts, barbeque, and kid’s events. Held at River Park, Downtown Hillsborough, W. Margaret Lane. Additional information is available at www.hogday.org.
